RV parking rules in Lubbock

Lubbock publishes unusually practical guidance: it defines an oversized vehicle, explains the front-yard setback, and states separate exceptions for loading and a visiting nonresident.

An RV, equipment item or trailer is “oversized” when it is over 7 feet wide, over 7 feet high or over 22 feet long. Oversized-vehicle storage is prohibited inside the required front-yard setback, generally measured 25 feet back from the property line.

Four-part rule audit

Lubbock’s Codes page resolves three of the four common homeowner questions.

Private-property storage
Confirmed: oversized RVs belong behind the required front-yard setback, in a side/rear yard, legal carport or enclosed building.
Public street
Not resolved by the private-property guidance reviewed. Check current traffic rules and posted restrictions separately.
Loading or maintenance
Confirmed for loading/unloading: no more than 48 hours in a one-week period inside the front setback.
Sleeping or habitation
Confirmed narrow exception: a visiting non-Lubbock resident may use it for living/sleeping up to 14 days in a 30-day period.

First, check all three dimensions

Lubbock’s definition uses “or,” so crossing any one threshold is enough. An RV that is 21 feet long can still be oversized because it is more than 7 feet wide or high. Measure the actual vehicle—not just the model name—and include attached equipment that affects the city’s measurement.

Can I store an RV in a Lubbock driveway?

A driveway does not automatically create a legal storage space. The city says oversized vehicles cannot be stored anywhere inside the required front-yard setback. Its guidance tells residents to measure 25 feet back from the property line and notes that the property line is usually at the inside edge of the sidewalk, on the house side.

Lubbock also explains that many houses sit near the minimum setback, leaving little or no driveway area behind that line. The important question is therefore not simply “Is it on the driveway?” but “Is the entire oversized vehicle behind the required front-yard setback?”

Where long-term storage can qualify

The city lists an enclosed building, a legal carport, a rear yard, a side yard, or another area behind the required front-yard setback. On a corner lot, an RV in the side yard adjacent to the street must be screened by a fence. The city encourages owners to contact the Codes Department before relying on a particular arrangement.

The 48-hour loading exception

An oversized vehicle may enter the setback area for loading or unloading, but the allowance is capped at 48 hours in a one-week period. That is a temporary service exception, not permission to use the same front-driveway space for between-trip storage.

Can a visitor sleep in the RV?

Lubbock publishes a narrow exception: an RV may be used as living and sleeping quarters when a non-Lubbock resident is visiting the people who occupy the address. The city limits that stay to 14 days in a 30-day period. A local resident living in the RV, or a stay beyond that window, does not fit the exception described on the Codes page.

Quick answers

Is a 22-foot RV oversized in Lubbock?

Length alone crosses the threshold only when it is over 22 feet. But the same RV is oversized if it is over 7 feet wide or over 7 feet high, which many RVs are.

Can I keep an RV in the front yard for a weekend?

Only the published purpose-specific exception should be relied on: loading or unloading for no more than 48 hours in one week. Merely calling a stay temporary does not turn storage into loading.

Can I apply for a variance?

The city says a property owner may apply to the Zoning Board of Adjustment for a hardship variance. Approval is not automatic; the RV becomes lawful in the front-setback area only if the variance is granted.

Before you park

  • Measure length, width and height.
  • Locate the property line and the full 25-foot front-yard setback.
  • Distinguish storage from active loading or unloading.
  • For a corner lot, identify whether the side yard borders a street and needs screening.
  • For guest use, confirm the visitor is not a Lubbock resident and track the 14-in-30-day limit.
Best official contact

Use the City of Lubbock Codes Department for the setback, corner-lot, variance or guest-use question; ask the appropriate traffic authority separately about street parking.
